Treatment

This is a narrative piece that shows a boy who goes into a bathroom as he is going through his usual morning routine (such as washing his hands brushing his teeth). However, the boy is very fastidious (careful and perfectionist) so he therefore wants to make sure everything is straight, neat and in order. So he will be doing things such as adjusting the soap, moving towels around, ect. At the same time as he's noticing these out of place or uneven things he will be getting more frustrated and anxious. Basically, I want to show how these small events escalate into a frenzy. However, this situation is ironic because getting into a frenzy about such small unimportant things is absurd. And in the end I plan on having the boy wake up as though it was a dream. However, the catch here is that, he realizes the alarm clock was set for "7:01" rather than "7:00", something that also frustrates the boy. Obviously, conveying emotions will be a big part of this piece. I therefore plan on capturing a vide variety of shots that consist of different angles and distance. For example a shot of just the subject's eyes or a shot of his quickly moving feet.

Hey Peter!
Im excited about the changes to your video idea. I think that it not ending solely with it being a dream is a nice touch and funny. i really like the idea of it being comprised of mostly close up shots too. this is an interesting approach because it can make the viewer really lose sense of their surroundings which makes it more surreal. that combined with the subtle humor will make it a great dream sequence! I think you should think about and maybe rewatch some of Jan Svankmejer's animation (we watched his version of Alice in Wonderland) not for the animation but for the sound design. He was really great at over exaggerating sound effects to give the scene an erie and creepy vibe. But it came across as funny at the same time because it was so extreme. Since there won't be any real dialogue it is going to be the sound effects that really set the mood. And I know that YOU know how to use that ZOOOMMMM!
Also I want you to take a look at some Cassavettes films. Have you seen him before? SO COOL! His style is so disorienting because he uses close up shots sooo much which makes it hard to get a sense of the space the characters are in and where everyone is in relation to each other therefore making it feel like you are watching some strange other planet.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTm6Z-hrQmU- this is a clip from "The Killing Of A Chinese Bookie" an excellent film from Cassavetes which I hope you find helpful. It is a little risque so if you skip to 3:02 into it thats the point I am trying to make about shooting techniques. I think its really brilliant to show the girl auditioning for a stripper position just from the waist down frolicking. It makes it seem funnier and is interesting to put focus on just part of what's going on. Like maybe the main character is only paying attention to that. There is so many ways you can manipulate the viewers' mind by what you choose to show them! Think about it!
Talk to you soon!
