Structure of a Music Video

1. Linear vs. Non Linear
A. Linear- Could be a narrative story line that follows characters, time, with a beginning, middle, and end.
ex: a. Dizzee Rascal- Sirens http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgB7HP38Hkg&ob=av2e&safety_mode=true&pers...
b. Professor Green- Upper Clapton Dance http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIuQM_q0IUU&safety_mode=true&persist_safe...
c. Kimbra- Settle Down http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHV04eSGzAA&safety_mode=true&persist_safe...
d. Cibo Matto- Sugar Water http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EN9auBn6Jys&ob=av2e&safety_mode=true&pers...
(Also cool editing technique of split screen and reverse)
e. Norah Jones - Chasing Pirates http://youtu.be/uTxythHY09k

B. Non Linear- more experimental/ using visuals to represent parts of the song.
a. Kid Cudi- Maker Her Say http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xt22KvnRSL4&ob=av2e&safety_mode=true&pers...
(No linear story, pay attention to the detail of color and location. Visuals don't necessarily
represent the content of the song. Use of split screen)
b. Edan- Echo Party http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDbBL9IFpCg&safety_mode=true&persist_safe...
(Using visual cues to represent different parts of the song. Edan DJ's already made songs
together and the video director dj's images together. See how they relate?)
c. Karl Blau- Mockingbird Diet http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IhtN1l9-cWc&safety_mode=true&persist_safe...
(Karl Blau literally represents each instrument you hear in the song through split screen. Another example here!!---> http://www.youtube.com/user/PomplamooseMusic#p/c/F125407272F3C1A4/0/Uolz...

2. Pace- Modeling the rhythm of the video after the rhythm of the song. Ex: a slow song might have longer takes and a slower feel to the movement of the video. Pacing could also be modeled after lyrics and what the words within the song represent.

3. Visual Style (Art Design)
A. Camera Movement- using tripod, depth of field, framing, and how all of this conveys mood.
B. Light- Affected by mood of song
C. Color- Also affected by mood of song (difference between light and dark colors)
D. Location- Inside/ Outside (how this effects your camera work, what feeling do you get from location)
E. Characters- costumes/ roles
