Bathroom: need to light it

Bathroom: need to light it better. Robin’s line is incomprehensible. How can you mix the vocals so that the dialogue is more full? Be consistent with the aspect ratios. You will want to spend a lot of time on filtering and color correction.

Hey Spencer and Jian Mei!
Sorry to have missed your screening but I watched the DVD and really liked what you've done so far!
Did you know that all your audio is coming out of the left channel only?
I am also curious about what part of the story is this?
Beginning?
I'd like to end with that I think you've done a great job editing so far and I'm looking forward to seeing more!

This is a great start. You elicit fantastic performances from your actors. This is a really important (and very difficult) skill for directors to develop. So you've done a really good job with that!!! You also have great comedic timing. And the editing is smooth and clean.

One thing: Robin speaks really fast and I can't totally understand what he's saying.

I also think the beginning in the bathroom, with the bandaid and the weird slice of light, is a little confusing.

First off I think it’s really

First off I think it’s really interesting. The scene in russian...that’s just awesome.

Here’s what I like:
• You’ve got interesting actors and the story moves
• The shooting overall is good – I love the opening shot in the bathroom. Honestly, I think you should hold the MS the whole time and not cut out of it. It’s very disorienting and you’re trying to figure out what is going on.
• You guys have a knack for making the viewer curious...

Here’s where I think you guys could improve:
• For a film about sound there is no sound design! - this is really noticeable in the Russian Roulette scene. You may be getting to this at a later stage but I think you need it in sooner than later. Drones, single building notes etc...sounds to build tension. Then when he shoots himself with the mic and there is NO SOUND, it becomes something. As it stands, it’s a little thin right there.
• I wouldn’t mind some closeups. There’s a lot of MS and WS...do you have these?
• I don’t know if you need to cut as much...I almost like the long takes better, like in the opening shot. I would play around with this.
• Everything is really bright — start messing around now with putting a vignette on the edges (a black hallo effect) and changing the coloring. Make the outside scene really BLUE (and then pull it back if it looks too weird). Make the RR scene look really GREEN...

Random, obscure film that you guys will either love or will wonder why I recommended it to you:
• Tarkovsky “ The Stalker” - it’s a very serious version of what you guys are making - - minus the sound stuff. You can probably get on Netflix.

Hope this is helpful. Keep going, it’s great and I can’t wait to see more!
