SOUND PROJECT(ION)

For my sound project, I want to incorporate one of my favorite things since childhood: the T. It's been my lifeline to Cambridge and Boston. I remember nagging my older sister to take me to Harvard square with her; later on I would commute back and forth for work purposes. Also, it's really great listening to random ends of conversation on the T--

"He wears really nice shoes, which you know is important to me in a man.."

"I thought we were going to die for a second"

"Obama's doing what?!"

I also once saw a guy whip out a bottle of vodka and drink from it. At first I wanted to believe he was recycling the bottle and there was water in there, but then he took out his water bottle.

I sometimes forget that the train compartment is a public space, and I guess I really feel at peace on the T ride. It's very contained. I want to document a conversation and perhaps weave through some echoing internal dialogue between two people that is reactive to what is being heard and said.

Love It. The dialogue will

Love It. The dialogue will obviously be random, but what is a list of all the predictable sounds from your excursion?
Also, will there be an overarching timeline? Will you and your friends be in it, or will it be complete strangers.
Are we going from one place to another? Is it one stop? Does it end or loop?

This is awesome. It's something that is really fun and the audience can all relate to so it will be really cool to get your personal touches in there. I also really like what you said about what the T means to you because I think personal attachment will make the piece stronger! Were you thinking about making it a really realistic portrayal or experiment with all the different types of audio that happens in the train and play with layering and such? Will there be any audio that is recorded outside of the actual train, maybe effects made by you, to add emphasis or more surreal elements or were you going to be strictly using what you picked up in the train? The most intriguing part is the bits of conversation! I know that's always my favorite part of riding the train! Sometimes I put on headphones but don't turn on my music just so its better to eavesdrop! You'll be a regular Harriet the Spy! It will also be interesting to incorporate the more industrial sounds that come along with riding the train like it physically running, screeches, the announcements of the stop, doors opening...
Looking forward to talking to you more!
