Sound Project Draft

Lingering questions: Should it be staged or should I attempt to capture natural conversations?

Fade in & weave random conversations occurring at the same time on the T.

Focused at center of the piece is a personal discussion, perhaps between two friends? Or two parents? A LOVERS' SPAT????????

The conversation would be extremely personal, perhaps not fit for a public area. I guess I want it to contrast against the openness of the T-- to have all these trivial things alongside such a serious discussion.

Hey Jen!
It sounds like you know what you want to happen on the T. I like what you said about contrasting the openness of the train with a very personal conversation. It's amazing how much people share in front of crowds of strangers! But even though it would be more authentic to capture natural conversations from actual train riders- it might be impossible to catch the conversation that you need to be the center of the piece and get your point across. But that shouldn't stop you from eavesdropping on the train and taking notes of what you are hearing (both conversations wise and sound effects wise) to use as inspiration to then write your own conversation. It might be interesting to have many conversations going on but then accentuate just certain parts of one until you get the whole story... Or have one person be on the train for a while and he/she has different people that she knows (or even doesn't know) come sit down with her/him and talk to her/him and then get off at the next stop...
I don't know if you have ever seen this movie called "The Conversation". It stars a younger Gene Hackman and is directed by Francis Ford Coppolla and is really good! It doesn't deal specifically with train conversations but with secretly recording a conversation. It is really well done so that you the audience are figuring out whats going on along wtih the main character (Gene). He is hired by a man who thinks his wife is cheating on him to plant mics around and try to pick up any clues as to if it is true. I won't give it away but its a hard case and Gene has to use lots of different ways to record them and then piece together all the information by listening to it over and over again. Each time he listens you learn something new. It's a good movie to check out in general also!
Talk to you soon!
