Revised Emo Documentary
Emo Documentary
The purpose of my Emo documentary is to explore the Emo culture in greater depth and to debunk all of the untrue stereotypes. I think its important because the Emo culture has gone mainstream and a lot of people seem to have forgot what the Emo culture really is. Also, the Emo culture is one of the most hated and misunderstood sub-cultures in the world right now and all the haters seem really ignorant about the culture. I have a few people I want to interview. I want to interview my friend Alex, because he fits the physical stereotype of Emo, but he doesn’t consider himself Emo. I think he’ll be good in saying why he doesn’t consider himself Emo and what he thinks Emo really is. I also want to interview his girlfriend Roisin, because she could have similar insight on Alex. Also, Roisin considers herself Emo so I want to know what about she thinks is Emo. I think I will be a good person to interview because I’ve been around a lot of people who are “Emo” and also, based on my interpretation of Emo, I consider myself Emo, but I don’t have the look of it at all. I also have two friends, Charlie and Peter, who fit the look of Emo. I don’t know if the consider themselves Emo but both are very knowledgeable about the culture. I also have a friend, Devin, who hates emos and I want to see why he hates them so much. I want to know what about the Emo culture he doesn’t like and see if his reasons are stereotypes or real.
I also think it would be good to interview random people to see how the general public approves of Emos. I think it would be best to get a wide range of ages from teenagers to old people to see how answers vary with age. A policeman might be good as well to see if knows about the sub-cultures or if he just sees trouble.
I don’t want to set up Devin to look stupid. I just want to hear his opinion and possibly learn some aspects of the culture I didn’t know about before. Most of the hatred comes from teens (peer to peer) so to get a true peer who hates Emos would be an interesting and useful interview.
I also need a lot of footage of what emos like to do in their spare time besides sitting in the corner and crying and writing sad poetry. This would go between interview and maybe at the beginning of some before fading into the person that’s talking and vice versa.
To get some random people, I’m going to go to Coolidge Corner and ask some people if I can interview. This would also be pretty useful because I have no idea what kind of answers I’m going to get from them. I might get some really normal looking people (as in people that are obviously in a different culture saying that they are totally fine with emos and they know a lot about it. Also, I’m going to a store called Hot Topic, which is a real “Emo store.” I’m going to try to get some interviews with a few of the customers.
Prince and Sam are also good people because they don’t really have a problem with emos but don’t really know much about.
Going into the culture, I want to explain the style, the way emos think and from haters, the way they are perceived by other people, and their music. People seem to think Emo music is just sing about being sad and depressed, but I think their music talks about real life and what it really is.

Jeremy, This is a great
Jeremy,
This is a great document to get you started on your documentary. I think you have outlined your purpose, well, and identified those whom you want to interview. I am confident that you will much in doing this piece, while i is clear you obviously have some strong feelings about the topic.
An important approach is to stay as unbiased as you can when you ask the questions, so you can let people answer honestly. You do want to push people to say the things they might not say because they are uncomfortable. You also want to push people sometimes to say the things the think they would never say. the skill of the interviewer is so important.
Go to http://www.icateens.org/resources and read the Interviewing and Reporting links
Your next step is to create your questions, and a production schedule. These should be two separate posts that you will edit.
You are on your way!
