project treatment
untitled, as of now
The piece takes place across three years. Centers around Katherine, a bored housewife who takes up the project of writing to prisoners at an unspecified jail. The woman is pregnant with her 1st child and feels uneasy about the child's arrival; she holds a sense of fatalism that's been passed on from her own mother. She passes the time by browsing for things online, looking for ridiculous child-proofing material and finally stumbles upon the write-a-prisoner program. It champions forgiveness and rehabilitation, she readily embraces that. She's filled with odd excitement as she browses through those who have committed what Law & Order would call "specially heinous crimes", preferring those with voluntary manslaughter charges over those who have committed petty theft. She is contented by the constant letters, the back-and-forth providing enough support throughout her pregnancy. Her husband is largely out of the picture. By the time the prisoner's release date comes around, Katherine begins to worry.

Hey Jen! I just have a few
Hey Jen!
I just have a few questions about your project!
How is her husband out of the picture?
How do you show the time lapse of 3 years?
Do you have to show the baby getting older?
Why did you choose 3 years for this to take place?
Have you written out a script yet?- I was just curious as to the order in which the information will be presented... at first I was imagining it chronologically and we watch her go through the events of discovering the correspondance and what each letter says. But then I was wondering if there was a way for it to start from where she is worried about him getting released and coming to her house and work backwards or gather information through letters that explains how she got to this point. I just thought maybe this way it is starting off with an intense conflict to capture the attention right off the bat and holds you captive as you try to figure out why and how this is happening... what were you thinking?
Will there be mostly voice overs?
Maybe since you will not be taking out equipment until March 4th you can write a quick script or outline that make these things more clear so then you will be able to get through shooting faster also!
Hope to talk to you more soon about it!
Lenora
