I'm responding to the clarifications regarding my first concept, since this is the one Erin suggested I pursue and the one I am most interested in doing. The question was about keeping the plot engaging for the audience and how it will end. I the think what will keep the audience engaged will be the contrast between the stressful studying and how it leads them to give up and start doing ridiculous things. I want the two characters to start doing things like coloring their papers with crayons, reading a picture book, or even jump roping. Their exact actions aren't set in stone yet, but the purpose is to have them do things that seem ambiguous and spontaneous, while at the same time having them talk as though these are typical things they do everyday. This, in it's nature, should make the audience entertained, and hopefully make them find the piece funny. At the end I would want them to go back to doing something that's more serious but at the same time strange as well, such as sweeping the floor or cleaning the table. Throughout the piece I want to focus on the tone of their dialogue so I can bring out the shifts of their emotional state. The main purpose of this piece would be to make people laugh, but it is also to show the transition during adolescence. Essentially, this piece would show the extremities of taking things in life seriously and being unaware of negligecting the surroundings/ situation.
