Joe Zane

My favorite piece in the running to win the foster prize is L'Una Figura, by Joe Zane. My first thing I thought of was the Sphinx, because they are both missing their noses. However, on Zane's piece this is intentional. I think that it was a very interesting idea and creative idea to make a piece with it's nose smashed on the floor. It was also a gamble, but personally, I really liked it and I think it works really well. The missing nose is what I really admire about the piece. I think the choice to use a sculpture for this was a good a idea. It makes the piece seem more "interactive" in a way. If he did it in a painting, I probably would have not liked it at all. In a painting, it would have been real obvious that the smashed nose was intentional. I like how the sculpture adds more a mystery about it. I think this piece should win the foster prize because, in my opinion, it was the most creative piece out there. All the other pieces were good, but easier to come up with an idea like them. I liked how Zane took a risk with this piece and it really worked well.

Hey Jeremy!
I'm so glad you liked the Joe Zane because I really liked him a lot too. I think it's also really interesting that you picked L'Una Figura as your favorite because most of the reviews of his work have completely over looked that one and focus mostly on the glass flowers and portraits and Italian neon lights. Now that you mention it though, I have thought more and more about that one and realized how awesome it is too. It seems easy to overlook because it is white against the white walls of the gallery and is behind the beautiful glass flowers. But there is so much going on there! At first it seems like a traditional Greek sculpture and is technically perfect except for the nose. And what a statement to show it in crumbs on the ground! It seems hilarious and I'm not even sure why.
Also I can see why you like him so much because I think Joe Zane has a really great sense of humor. Very subtle and clever. A lot of his works have double meanings and seem to be responses to other famous works of art. Like a famous Italian painting that has the words "I Love You" in it is responded to in his painting " Te Amo Anche" (I love you too). This makes him extra memorable because I feel like a lot of the other Foster Prize contenders have a more serious tone or message to their works. Zane lets you have fun!
