Jane Urban - Sound Project !

Idea 1:
I was thinking to do a piece where my parents are ranting about something that I don't believe in / don't care about, and their voices start echoing around in my head. My parents are both lawyers, and are madly in love with the legal system, and I have views that are really different from theirs. They rant to me a lot and complain about everything I do, and I usually just block all of it out.

Idea 2:
A surround sound piece of my friend and I hiding in the bushes from the police.

Idea 3:
Two people skipping school - made to sound like it's a really epicly plotted scheme. Then they get into the car and drive to Dairy Queen.

Idea 4:
Two friends try out for the school's "non-cut" sailing team, and almost die.

NOVEMBER13:
I think that Idea 1 would be good, but I have no idea how to capture them in full rant mode. And it might sound weird or forced if I had people try and act them out. I can't really think of any way that I could get a recording of them ranting about things that annoy me. Maybe I could interview each of them separately about things they always rant to me about, and then I could cut it up all echo-y and stuff?

I think that Idea 2 could be interesting if there was like rustling in the bushes / the sound of sirens and stuff like that. It might be easier to record.

("Non-cut" sailing team is when the school system informs you that it is a non-competitive sports team and that they can't cut anyone because they lack the necessary skills they need to excel in the sport, but they then actually go about cutting people, thus, slashing all their hopes and dreams.)

Jane- a lot of these ideas

Jane-

a lot of these ideas sound like they would work better as visual pieces, but the first one could work really well as a sound piece. you could do some experimenting with echo and reverb and delay sounds with your parent's voices as their conversation progresses, to give the sense of "echoing around in your head". the logistical question is, how will you get this recording? will you try to sneak up on them with a zoom recorder when they are talking (which will be tricky) or will you give them a script? also, how will you make it clear to the listener that you don't agree with their views? idea #2 could also work, because the bushes would provide interesting sound effects and you also wouldn't have to rely on your parents being available in order to get a recording.

Jane! I can already hear idea

Jane! I can already hear idea #1 in surround sound. To add onto what Anna says, how will you make this happen? Will you get actors to play your parents? Will you record your parents - either script or actual? What other sounds would you use (if any)?

What's a "non-cut" sailing team? :)
