Goals for 08-09
This being my first year in Fast Forward, my goals are fairly straightforward. I hope to at least get a good handle on the film equipment, and also get better at editing the film. Artistically, I hope to get better at expressing myself through film. I also want to find out what kind of film I make best, and what part of me directly influences my films, so i can make use of that knowledge. If I know what part of me goes into my films, I can work more towards those parts.
My last goal is to submit a film to at least one festival by the end of class, whether it is something I do in class or outside of it.
As for my final project, I'm not quite sure what I want to do yet. I had originally wanted to do a narrative film, but I'm starting to sway more towards a documentary. There are a lot teens around me who want to say something, and I think I could really help them (and myself) do so through my movies. So for now, I'll continue thinking up stories for a narrative peace, but I'm also going to talk to people and see if there's something I feel like I absolutely need to make a movie about. I'm sure there's something out there.

These are great goals for the year. As you explore filmmaking, you will find that you might be drawn to one aspect of it. That might end up becoming your specialty. You should also consider helping on other people's projects, working as camera person, sound, or other to continue to try various aspects of the filmmaking process.
To get started with you final project, I'll need you list out for the narrative, some story ideas. Keep it general for now (a story that deals with power struggles between 2 friends, as they have to deal with a complicated message from a stranger). For the documentary, give me a list of some general topics or issues that you would like to approach.
Please have these posted by 12/9.
Hiya Robin, Great, great
Hiya Robin,
Great, great goals - from learning the basics of the equipment to expressing yourself artistically to getting your work seen by a larger audience. Getting your work into festivals is really important and I'm glad you are already thinking ahead to that.
If you are interested in pursuing a documentary, I'd be happy to give you more resources or help you talk through your ideas. You can be really playful and artistic in documentaries, too, and, as you say, it could help you give voice to important issues in your life and the lives of your friends.
You might want to check out some of the work of the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies (though they do photography and sound). Could inspire you:
