First Impression: Shepard Fairey
I noticed that there's a lot of propaganda in Shepard Fairy's work. What I really like about his work is how in almost all of his pieces, he used collage. If you looked really closely, you see cutouts of newspaper articles. I also like how he kept up the theme of Andre the Giant and obey in most of his paintings. What I want to know is that in his paintings, is the propaganda actual propaganda or is he making fun of propaganda?

Jeremy, This is the same
Jeremy,
This is the same question I have. Maybe this is his whole point. I don't know. He uses a variety of different visual types of propaganda too which is interesting. Like the old Russian propaganda posters but also that type of U.S. advertisement style that was big in the 50s. Where everyone looks cute and happy and they say Come to Niagra Falls! But he puts a contemporary twist on it and makes it darker. Is he poking fun at that type of propaganda or the subject he is displaying? Maybe both!
