HATERS MADE US FAMOUS -

HATERS MADE US FAMOUS
- great title and great ending. You start and end really strongly and which is great because I know this is a subject that you feel really strongly about. It shows!
- During the interview with yourself I think there is some smoothing out you can do. There are a few pauses and “ums” that can help tighten up what you are trying to say and make it even stronger. Those cuts can then be bandaided by some cool b roll that I know you have.
- I like the b roll that you used during your interview where you talked about stuff you liked doing. It really illustrated your point and you should try to do more of it.
- The hair straightening scene is out of place and really short but doesn’t necessarily need to be cut out. I think you could use that as b roll during an interview too when one of the emo kids are talking about appearance.
- I think your questions need to be re ordered. They are all good topics to be brought up but you have to remember that most of us don’t know much about this subculture. You need to lead us through it like a story. We need an introduction to these people so maybe it would be more helpful to hear emos and sam hannon talking about what emo is to them before we learn about what they look like and what they do for fun.
- Do you have any more parts of the interviews that you haven’t used? There were some questions that only had one answer maybe you could beef up those sections? If not its ok its not really that big of a deal but I think it would help to hear more said after each question. Or you could lump some answers together under a more broad question so that there are more responses.
- I like hearing you say each question I think that was a nice touch!
This has a lot of great information and I think you are doing a great job! Can’t wait to see more!

JOE'S COMMENTS
Need more of an intro. Starts too quickly.
Images of Emos. B-roll. More of it?
Use that B-Roll over the interview with Jeremy.
I don’t want to see the 1st guy again.
Start with “I don’t’really know Emo but Emotional.”
Make that song longer.
"What does it look like?" answer can go to beginning.
Ned to balance the sounds.
You need interludes in between each piece.
Prince’s last comment is weird way to end.
Comment on Obama is from one perspective.

STUDENTS COMMENTS
Need to work on the voice-overs. Enhance the movie.
Interviews were not clear on subject.
Scene when he straightens hair. Seems random. Maybe add more small videos.
More diversity of people being interviewed.
Interview a girl?
Gets point across. Shots cold have been executed better.
Keep hair straightening thing as b-roll. Maybe questions should go in a different order. Wasn’t led through something well.
Extra footage about how emos are diverse.

Jeremy! I am so glad you're

Jeremy! I am so glad you're doing this piece - it speaks volumes about the importance of looking past stereotypes. I know you've done a lot of work on it since the critique and I can't wait to see how it's shaped up since! Onto the feedback...
* Audio levels!
* I love that you're not afraid to put yourself in this piece. That's great - we get to see why this is important to you as a filmmaker. That said, the first interview piece with you giving your opinions could stand to be shortened. You repeat yourself, so you could cut down and make tighter.
* I love love how you incorporated photos into what you "like to do" - do you have similar b roll for the other folks you interview? Even if it's pictures of them playing guitar or sports or whatever it is they like to do?
* The guy who's interviewed on the couch... there was one part where the music that you brought in was conflicting with the music that was on in the background already. I'd get rid of the added music.
* I'm sure you've re-ordered it by now and we already talked about merging the "what does an emo look like" with "how do they dress?" - it's the same thing essentially.
* So so great that you've gotten permission from the musicians to use their music. I know you've put a lot of work into that, so BRAVO.
* Great work, Jeremy!! I'm so glad that I got the chance to work with you over vacation week and I can't wait to see your piece at the screening!
